She was 21 ½ inches long. Her major organs were all of average weight and size. She resembled her two year old brother Greyson, Dark, curly hair covered her head. She had a round face, pudgy cheeks and a dimple in her chin.
She looked peaceful, healthy, normal. But she wasn’t.
She was stillborn.
Raine was sick in utero – she had a collection of cysts in her tummy – but her condition was not diagnosed as life threatening.
Raine was a very active baby. She loved to move and kick.
Twice a week for the last half of mother Jen’s pregnancy, doctors monitored Raine’s heartbeat and checked her via ultrasound. She always passed her tests with flying colors. Her heart beat was always normal, she practiced her breathing inside her mama’s belly, and she always put on a show, moving and kicking for the doctors and ultrasound techs.
Raine had a beautiful room, filled with lots of bright colors; purples, pinks, yellows. She had a big yellow chair her mommy and daddy had bought for her to be rocked in when she was born.
Raine had a whole wardrobe waiting for her from her cousin Ryan and her mother’s friends. Raine also had a cute purple stuffed animal that Marisa, her mom’s best friend bought for Raine when Raine and mommy started having medical tests for Raine’s health. Her brother Greyson (2 years old) would point to Raine in momma’s belly a lot and say, “baby”. Raine also had a beautiful blanket made by her grandma out of her mommy’s wedding dress waiting for her arrival.
One day before Raine was stillborn, mommy went to the hospital with contractions. She was sent home; it was a false alarm. Raine’s heart was beating.
Mommy went into labor on January 27th, 2011, very early in the morning. Mommy was so excited to meet Raine. She couldn’t wait to hold her, hug her, and smell her. Sometime between the false alarm at the hospital and going into labor, Raine’s heart stopped. No one knows why.
